Role: Experience Producer
Type: Touring Live Performance
Venue: Soulwax World Tour (International)
Objective: Lead the concept and production of an immersive, scalable stage experience that transforms live concerts into cinematic, sensory-driven installations.
✨ Project Overview
Founded by David and Stephen Dewaele, Soulwax has redefined the boundaries of live music—fusing rock, electronic, and performance art. Known for projects like 2manydjs, DEEWEE, and Despacio, their work blurs the lines between sound, space, and sensation.
For the Soulwax World Tour, I led the creative direction and production of a modular, retro-futuristic stage experience—designing custom visuals, lighting systems, and performance infrastructure. The goal: to create a scalable, high-impact installation that evolved with the music in real time, delivering emotional and audiovisual intensity across global venues.
🧭 Design Objectives
At the heart of the challenge: how to create an emotionally charged, tech-forward live experience that could scale from intimate venues to massive festival stages without compromising immersion.
- ✔ Consistency Across Venues – Engineered a modular system with fixed dimensions (10m × 6m × 6.1m)
- ✔ Immersive Intimacy – Designed to collapse the space between audience and artist
- ✔ Audiovisual Synchronization – Integrated light, motion, and sound to evolve with every beat
🔍 Spatial Strategy & Touring Optimization
Touring required speed, repeatability, and impact. I designed a streamlined layout that allowed local crews to install quickly without sacrificing spectacle.
- • Zoned layout for DJ booth, drum kits, and lighting towers
- • Pre-rigged lighting architecture for fast setup/tear-down
- • Performance space designed to adapt to varied sightlines and acoustics
🌀 Visual Identity & Brand Aesthetic
The visual concept drew from Soulwax’s hybrid DNA—part analog grit, part digital sheen.
- • Analog + Digital Fusion – LED textures mimicked old-school oscillators and vintage synths
- • Cinematic Lighting – Used light to sculpt emotion, depth, and spatial drama
- • Retro-Futurism – A visual love letter to '70s sci-fi, reimagined with modern tech
- • Installation Art Vibe – The stage became a shape-shifting, breathing art object
💡 Key Design Features
- 1. Interactive Lighting Grid: A beat-reactive mosaic wrapped the space in synchronized rhythm and color.
- 2. Real-Time Projection Mapping: Live visuals reacted dynamically to tempo, tone, and transitions—projected across vertical and horizontal planes.
- 3. Layered Light Systems: Floor + overhead rigs blurred performer and crowd—amplifying shared energy.
- 4. Custom Sound & Performance System: Artist-friendly layout for seamless audio control and fidelity.
✏️ Creative Process & Technical Development
- 📝 Storyboard Sketches – Mapped transitions, light sequences, and audience flow
- 📐 Stage Blueprint – Detailed layout for rigging, cabling, artist zones, and audience sightlines
🌌 Immersive Audience Experience
- 1️⃣ Front Row – Surrounded by pulsing visuals and immersive sound
- 2️⃣ Command Center – The DJ booth as a sculptural, glowing nerve center
- 3️⃣ 360° Lightfield – Overhead + side projection created a shifting sensory landscape
📈 Outcomes & Touring Impact
- 🔹 Real-Time Immersion Each show adapted to the night’s rhythm—no two performances looked or felt the same.
- 🔹 Global Scalability Designed to flex from small clubs to major arenas without compromising energy or aesthetic.
- 🔹 Live Storytelling Through Light + Sound Positioned Soulwax not just as a band, but as a full-spectrum experience brand.
